The Kolsay Lakes (Kazakh: Көлсай көлдері) are a chain of three incredibly beautiful mountain lakes hidden in the coniferous forests of the northern Tien Shan at altitudes ranging from 1,800 to 2,850 meters above sea level.
They are often called the "pearl of the Almaty region" or the "blue necklace" for their crystal-clear, hues-shifting emerald-turquoise water and the picturesque setting of spruce slopes and alpine meadows. This is a haven for trekkers, photographers, and those seeking communion with nature.

Located at an altitude of 2,250 m, a 5-kilometer hike from Lower Lake. The trail leads through forest and mountain slopes. The lake is wilder and quieter, surrounded by cliffs and relict Tien Shan spruce. The water here appears deeper and more intensely colored. Infrastructure is minimal.

The lake is smaller than the previous ones, but its location against the backdrop of mountain giants creates a truly grandiose picture. The air is thin and crystal clear. There is no infrastructure, only tents. A permit from the border service is required.

- Leave Almaty on the Kuldzha Highway (A351).
- Take the Kuldzha Highway (A351) to the village of Saty (approximately 180 km from Almaty).
- In Saty, follow the signs for Kolsai Lakes/Lake Kaindy.
- Continue for about 35 km on asphalt until the turnoff for Kolsai.
- The last 12 km is a dirt mountain road (serpentine). Travel time from Almaty: 4-5 hours.
- An entrance fee must be paid at the checkpoint. The main parking lot is also located here.

June and September are less crowded, with cool days and nighttime frosts possible at altitude. Nature is in full bloom.
May, October: Border months. Snow is possible on the passes to Srednee and Verkhnee lakes, and nights are cold. Roads can be challenging, but there are no crowds.
November – April: Winter season. The road to Kolsai-1 is usually cleared. The lakes freeze, the scenery is magical, but it is very cold (-15 to -25°C and below at altitude). Serious gear and experience are required. Visiting Srednee and Verkhnee lakes in winter is for extreme sports enthusiasts.
